Wotts takes music experimentation to new heights with their new single “Laundry".

Updated: Jun 8

After a busy 2023, during which the Canadian band kept surprising us time and again with their magical creations, releasing 5 studio singles and a spectacular EP, this 2024 seems more than a challenge, it's a competition already won for the talented duo based in Ottawa.

Their masterful discography, which continues to grow, now boasts its third release of the year with their new single titled "Laundry." In this track, they not only dazzle us once again with their innate creativity but also take the reins of musical creation into their hands, introducing a new and refreshing style that is redefining their sound.

But we’re not talking about those typical cases where "uhhh... that band isn’t what it used to be." The cases are countless and we get it, but with Wotts, this phenomenon doesn’t occur. Even we here at Bad Wolf Records, who consider ourselves true fans of the band, perceive their musical evolution as something gradual and genuine, developed over time and with many years of work. This has given rise to an auditory blend that manages to retain the characteristic essence of their beginnings while incorporating new sonic elements, showcasing an artistic maturity where it's possible to appreciate how both musicians have given their best to further improve their presence and strengthen their musical identity.

About Wotts:

Wotts, an indie pop/pop rock duo based in Ottawa, Canada, consists of vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Jayem and bassist/guitarist Ricky 100. With appearances at festivals like RBC Bluesfest, Canadian Music Week, and Junofest, as well as recognition from media outlets such as CBC Radio (Canada), EARMILK (US and Canada), and Mystic Sons (UK), Wotts has firmly established their presence in the music scene, becoming a significant figure in contemporary music.

Their distinctive sound combines modernity with retro elements, creating a unique fusion that resonates with a wide audience. Through their emotive lyrics and carefully crafted instrumentation, Wotts weaves emotional narratives exploring universal themes such as love, heartbreak, feelings of loss, and disillusionment, nonetheless, they contrast these with melodies that convey a sense of hope and vitality.

Track Analysis:

With strong influences from European indie rock that have been part of their inspiration for some time now, these influences are increasingly evident in their music with each new release. This time around, they are manifested through amazing bass lines that show greater presence and prominence compared to their previous offerings, guitars that are increasingly strident yet intensely melodic, and deep, reverberating percussion work.

In this way, "Laundry" emerges as an exquisite musical piece that manages to balance Wotts' auditory experience, but takes it to the next level. While elements characteristic of psych-pop are still present, particularly in their synthesizers and various ambient effects, it is becoming immensely difficult to categorize them into a single genre at this point in their career. Fans of styles like post-punk and even garage rock will find certain familiarities in this composition and will be undoubtedly enchanted with it.

"We’ve been doing this for two years and I think we’re finally starting to settle into a lane. We’ll always be down to throw in something fresh, but we like the idea of having a recognizable sound or vibe”.

Jayem – Singer/Multi-instrumentalist.

This not only demonstrates and proves that Wotts as a band knows no limits when it comes to creativity and experimentation, apart from being very good at it, since behind this impeccable result there is a constant effort by the band to surpass not only what already exists but also themselves, always bringing surprises and songs that manage to stir the consciousness and emotions of listeners.

"Laundry" feels like a new and refreshing chapter in the story of this great band, setting high expectations for what they will bring in the future. It presents itself as an improved version of the band itself in terms of composition and production. Much like what happens with those iconic movies where the sequel even surpasses the original. While some may argue about this (and we know such cases are few and far between), "Laundry" is definitely "The Lost World" of Jurassic Park, or "The Empire Strikes Back" of Star Wars.

The best part of this great news is that these expectations haven't come just to give us false hope (don't worry, Wotts is not like your ex gf/bf), as "Laundry" also serves as a small preview of their upcoming EP titled "Good People, Bad People," which we will soon have the pleasure of enjoying on all streaming platforms.
