That's right, just as the title of this article suggests, Rock n' Roll is far from being buried—rather, more alive than ever!

In previous articles, we predicted that this would be a fantastic year for the genre, and truth be told, 2024 has continued to exceed our expectations. Still skeptical? Well then, keep reading, as Vogue Villains, the formidable Canadian four-piece alternative rock outfit, has emerged to further validate our prediction.

Introducing themselves with an exquisite musical blend and an unmistakable sound that oscillates between the rawest elements of post-rock and immensely catchy melodies characteristic of pop-rock, this band has undoubtedly arrived to make an indelible mark on the current musical landscape. Thanks to their energetic rhythms and authentic themes surrounding each of their creations, they have managed to earn a place at the top of the vibrant music scene.

Today, they kindly share with all of us their latest studio release, titled "Tastes Like Sin."

Have you seen that movie where Megan Fox turns into a monster and starts murdering everyone around her? What was it called? Oh, yes, that is 2009's "Jennifer's Body." Well, this song shares many similarities with that iconic movie. No, it's not just the sensuality of the American actress and the sexy sound of the guitar riffs present in this song. "Tastes Like Sin" goes much further, narrating through its lyrics a dark story about a woman who, at night, lets her wild side flow and seeks revenge on those who tried to harm her.

About The Band

Vogue Villains' musical journey dates back to 2018, where they made their initial musical foray with the release of their first dual single, "Your New Skin" and "Low Budget Funeral." These songs quickly captured the attention of numerous listeners worldwide, accumulating tens of thousands of plays to this day. In this way, Vogue Villains began to swiftly make a mark in the rock scene, with the masterful lineup of its four members; Andrew Baskin on bass and lead vocals, Lucas Antoni handling the guitars, Nate Cox showcasing incredible precision on the drums, and Robert Johnston serving as a true keyboard maestro, defining their unmistakable musical fingerprint even from the outset. This band is one of those that, upon hearing them for the second time, you immediately recognize them.

Hailing from Campbell River, Canada, their captivating sound primarily focused on alternative rock is not something you can only enjoy in their recordings; Vogue Villains is a band that also manages to create a complete experience in live performances. With an incredible stage presence where each instrument blends perfectly with the others, generating a palpable sense of energy from the perspective of their audience, the band presents itself with a humorous touch that characterizes them and helps foster a closer bond with their thousands of fans.

About The Release

"Tastes Like Sin" stands as their thirteenth release in their spectacular discography, and the first one of this new year, 2024. Officially premiered on January 5th, this captivating track sets the stage for their first full-length album, "Built On Bones," which is currently in production and gearing up for its official debut in the first half of this year.

However, this song is part of an EP that bears the same name. It features 5 electrifying tracks, with "Tastes Like Sin" positioned as the first on the list, perfectly opening the complete artistic proposal. That's why we invite you to listen to the entire EP right here below.

In-Depth Analysis

"Tastes Like Sin" has everything it takes to become a true anthem of contemporary alternative rock – an instrumentally attractive melodic line that simultaneously flirts with compositional complexity, commanding vocals intertwined with catchy choruses, and an immensely interesting background theme. From the beginning, this song manages to capture the audience's attention and keeps them captivated throughout its entirety. The sound of the bass, skillfully played by Andrew Baskin, who takes the lead to kick things off, blends seamlessly with the heavy and sharp guitar riffs of Lucas Antoni, all while being complemented by the outstanding percussion work of Nate Cox, who takes the concept of 'precision' to new heights.

Just as this powerful introductory section comes to an end, the band hits us hard with a deadly punch in the face, creating a kind of instrumental 'break,' where the electric guitar takes the lead, this time shedding its heavy distortion and establishing a 'vintage overdrive' sound. Didn't catch what it's this about? Well, it's somewhat like the sound of Arctic Monkeys' guitars (almost all the time), but Vogue Villains clearly uses it authentically and solely as a transitional resource.

This is just one example of the band's greatness and dynamism, capable of disorienting even the most demanding listeners with abrupt yet well-executed changes throughout the musical structure of their compositions. Simultaneously, they deliver a sound that listeners can feel familiar with, creating an immense sense of surprise but in just the right measure. In this way, they set the perfect stage for the arrival of the chorus, where undoubtedly Robert Johnston steals the show, adding substantial layers of depth with the atmospheric sound of his synthesizer.

Right here is when Andrew's imposing voice makes its masterful entrance. Right from the first note, he delights us with his characteristic vocal tone, effortlessly navigating between low, mid, and high notes, showcasing not only his skill as a great vocalist but also as a singer with a well-defined sonic identity.

Through his interpretation, he tells a captivating story where the protagonist is a woman who, amidst the darkness of the nights and under the moonlight, undergoes a kind of monstrous transformation. She ventures out in search of revenge against those who harmed her once, inevitably reminding us of the classic 2009 film "Jennifer's Body" starring the beautiful American actress Megan Fox.

With a composition method that is simply admirable and employing literary resources focused  on visual references and carefully chosen metaphors, their narrative quickly becomes an experience that goes far beyond mere music. Vogue Villains are masters at telling stories vividly and immersively, inviting the listener to connect on a deeper level with the theme of each of their songs and encouraging them to even 'visualize' the story in their own minds.

As "Tastes Like Sin" unfolds through its almost four-minute duration, we are constantly surprised by its unique musical structure, which absolutely adheres to everything except respecting what is established as a standard in the genre. This creates a sense of curiosity in the listener from start to finish, showcasing why this band stands out and will always stay one step ahead of the rest.

If you enjoyed this article and particularly this song, we extend a warm invitation to take a look at the entire discography of this incredible band, which is undoubtedly worth experiencing.
