Fury Of A Dying Planet – “Repetition to Extinction”: ‘An Intense Reflection that Endures Over Time’.

How many times have we witnessed highly-elaborated and moving works of art that aspire to transform our behavior for good? Themes ranging from ‘environmental awareness’ and ‘animal life conservation’ to the denunciation of political corruption and the promotion of mental health are some of the issues that such works seek to address in order to create a lasting impact.

Let's be honest in here. While all of us have experienced an emotional shock when witnessing these issues through art, that feeling doesn't seem to endure over time. After a few minutes, you find yourself back in your sofa, turning on your 4k television to watch a bunch of politicians discuss irrelevant matters while eating McDonald's junk food just to throw its plastic package onto the street.

Some people even resort to arguments that suggest "personal change doesn't make any significant change to the whole panorama”. So, It seems that the message that was initially so important and impactful just failed to transcend at all.

From this perspective, it is pertinent to highlight that few artistic creations effectively communicate this impactful messages, and even more importantly, very few ensure its lasting impact over time.

Fury Of A Dying Planet has arrived precisely to inspire the change we've been waiting for. Like a beacon amidst the chaos, this musical project, created by the talented British musician and composer Doug Rimington, delivers a crucial message through its music. This message stands out for its ability to leave a profound impression which is meticulously crafted to ensure its endurance over time.

In this way, it transforms our consciousness into a substantial change that seeks to manifest itself in our perception and lifestyle.

About The Artist

Fury Of A Dying Planet was born as a collaborative project started by producer and composer Doug Rimington, who, with the help of his friend Chris Allan (session drummer), enlisted Paul Brigstock from the band “Backlight Vice” as the vocalist. Doug describes the inception of this musical project as a spontaneous phenomenon that arose after he watched the documentary "Seaspiracy" on Netflix, which focuses on the significant impact on the environment, particularly the negative aspects of fishing on marine life.

In this way, Doug Rimington took some demos he had previously written and added a dose of what he describes as "pure rage and anger" giving birth to an immersive sonic landscape that, through powerful storytelling, conveys messages of social criticism from different perspectives that are highly compelling and aim to create a real and definitive impact on the listeners.

About the Release

"Repetition to Extinction" is the second studio release from Fury Of A Dying Planet and, at the same time, It is the second track of their upcoming 6-song EP. Officially released on August 20, 2023, this song, with its 4:35-minute extension, promises to take you on a journey of reflection on our actions as human beings, boldly highlighting the selfishness and apathy of a humanity that appears insensitive to the irreversible consequences of our actions.

"Everyday I see the headlines, people complaining about things that really do not matter. The secret affair of a celebrity, the price of the latest brands. But these will mean nothing if we cannot feed our families or if we cannot breathe the air. If we take care of the planet, it will take care of us. If we let it suffer, we will all die, and yet few of us seem to consider this, instead being more worried about the next vacation or being able to buy into the latest fashionable trend".
Doug Rimington – Musician and Producer

In-Depth Analysis

The song begins with a suspenseful aura defined by a captivating melody provided by the gentle sound of an electric guitar in the hands of Doug Rimington. It delivers impeccable lead licks that resonate with dissonant notes over the song's melodic line. Accompanying this melody, a powerful percussion unfolds across the stereo channel, where its deep sound and single-note cymbal strikes create a kind of prelude to what's to come, effectively capturing the listeners' attention right from the start.

Immediately following this sequence, we delve into the song's first verse, in which its musical structure takes an unexpected turn. The drums accelerate their rhythm, focusing mainly on the double pedal's strokes, while the guitars take on a powerful distortion through a polished palm-muting technique. Thus, both instruments clearly define the rhythmic foundation on which the theme develops.

"Repetition To Extinction" presents itself as an intriguing social critique, inviting us to reflect on the consequences of our irresponsibility as human beings. Its lyrical composition is particularly notable, as it employs various literary devices to convey its message powerfully, compelling listeners to engage in deep reflection.

Through its verses, the song highlights aspects such as selfishness and apathy, primarily holding the political class responsible for enacting laws based on superficial and trivial concerns while neglecting what truly matters in our lives. This inevitably shapes our mentality and behavior in a detrimental way, leading us down a spiraling path to destruction.

Furthermore, the song's title is a clever choice of words by Rimington, as "Repetition to Extinction" aptly alludes to this phenomenon as If we do not become aware in time, we will witness our own demise and extinction.

Throughout the lyrics, Doug and Paul, with their distinctive vocal perfomance that combines spoken word and incredibly demanding melodies, create a dynamism that surprises anyone who has the opportunity to listen to this song. It is a clear testament to the magic of Fury Of A Dying Planet as a band and the incredible skill of these musicians in combining their talents.

As the song progresses, it adds various musical elements that create a vivid and energetic blend. For example, the inclusion of harmonized backing vocals and a synthesizer that arranges over the sequence of the first verses, creates an auditory landscape that generates a constant sense of progression and dynamism. Additionally, Doug, with incredible mastery in musical composition, dazzles us with constant changes in the instrumental background's tempo signature, while Paul sings: "Ignore 'The hungry Don't worry. Ignore The sick Don't worry," thus creating a sense of surprise in the audience while reinforcing the song's message.

One of the most iconic moments of "Repetition To Extinction" arrives around the 1:20-minute mark. This is where both the guitars and vocals take center stage. It serves as a kind of ‘bridge’, which is kind of unusual from a musical composition perspective. In most of the music genres out there, we are accustomed to the structure of "verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge." However, Fury Of A Dying Planet is not afraid to showcase its experimental nature. At this point, the guitars perform intricate harmonies together, while the singer effortlessly soars above his upper vocal range, creating an intense sense of auditory climax for the listener.

However, the surprises don't end there, as once this section concludes, the song returns to its initial structure, only to deliver the eagerly anticipated ‘breakdown’ (2:53). The breakdown of this song is utterly captivating for those who love genres like metalcore (yasss we all love metalcore here). While we are accustomed to breakdowns being accompanied by guttural vocals, Fury Of A Dying Planet chooses to give us clean yet powerful vocals, repeating the phrases: "It's time to open your eyes, Before it's Too late to save us from Repetition to Extinction," giving us one of the most remarkable lines of the song. The powerful voice of the singer soars again, hitting the high notes with incredible presence, delivering those lines as if they were an anthem, a flag of struggle against the system.

"Repetition to Extinction" as an Audiovisual Art Piece

"Repetition to Extinction" is not only a masterpiece in musical terms but also a captivating audiovisual piece. This song is accompanied by a lyric video that features an old analog television set placed amidst a forest of dead trees consumed by fire. The Television works as a portal to reality while the dead trees behind, is the irreversible harm we have inflicted upon our planet.

The television initially emits static, and then it begins to display a myriad of striking images, which are used as both metaphors and evidence to describe human decadence, superficiality, corruption, and, above all, the deterioration of current society. This creates a strong impact on listeners and enhances the immersion in the music panorama, providing a solid and cohesive experience.

The sound of Fury Of A Dying Planet is a challenging task to define and its even more difficult to classify into a single genre. This band It's an incredible fusion of different styles, ranging from alternative rock, prominently present in its melodic interludes, to the pronounced metalcore sound of its palm-muted guitars and double pedal percussion. It also incorporates experimental elements in its structure and heavy metal elements, especially noticeable in Paul's vocal performance when he reaches the upper limits of his vocal range, creating a unique and authentic combination that redefines the sound of what we already know in the metal scene.

We invite you to follow Fury Of A Dying Planet on their social media platforms to stay updated on their news and new releases.
