‘Closer to God’ by The Maze: “Religion as a Means of Escape from Calamity”

The Maze remains a powerful force in the independent rock and metal scene—not only due to the success they've achieved since their debut or their relentless effort to deliver striking compositions, but also because of their supernatural ability to capture the essence of our world with clarity and a unique sensitivity.

On numerous occasions, the band has boldly addressed, through their music, those conflicts that quietly yet powerfully shape our reality, shedding light on dynamics that go unnoticed by many.

In an era where the entire world seems completely numbed, focused, and utterly consumed by personal and superficial interests, The Maze becomes a gateway to awareness and true human awakening. Each of their songs is a call to look beyond the immediate and to reconnect with what truly matters.

Under this captivating premise, the acclaimed Swedish band led by hard rock legends Johan Flenkskov and Liam Espinosa returns with a profound reflection on a topic that divides opinions: the search for purpose and the meaning of life. While some reject this yearning, others cling to it in a constant spiritual quest.

On this opportunity, The Maze joins forces with renowned singer and lyricist Magnus Styrén—known for bringing musical projects like "Fata Morgana" and "Akilles" to life—to offer us an intimate perspective on religiosity and that spiritual connection we all seek, which, once found, transforms our perception of life. However, as expected from the masterminds behind this band, they couldn't settle for a simple take on the subject. In this new release, they highlight how this spiritual connection can become a double-edged sword: capable of illuminating the path to self-knowledge, yet also blinding us if it turns into fanaticism or a means to justify ruthless actions.

"Closer to God is a reflection on how humanity continues to hurt one another and how we use religion to justify it."

Johan Flenskov – Musician and Songwriter

The central theme of "Closer to God" becomes even more relevant when analyzed from a holistic perspective. If we consider the current global landscape, Johan's wise words, accompanied by Magnus's powerful lyrics, can even be extrapolated to the recent armed conflicts that have shaken the world. Despite the ideals of peace and empathy promoted by many religions, humanity continues to fall into patterns of strife and mutual harm. This contradiction highlights how, instead of using something as pure and divine as the search for spiritual connection as a path toward reconciliation, some people manipulate it to justify actions that even go against their own values.

Musically speaking, "Closer to God" is just as intriguing as its theme. Over the course of its 4-minute duration, hard rock and metal lovers will delight in aggressive guitar riffs, a magnificent percussion work, and Magnus's flawless vocal delivery. Together with Liam's guttural vocals, they shape a powerful musical piece that perfectly reflects the tension and intensity of its message, pushing the audience to question whether we are truly striving to reach a higher spiritual level or if we are merely escaping from our responsibility and consideration for others.

"Closer to God," officially released on November 7, 2024, arrives as the direct follow-up to "Northern Lights" and stands as the band's eighth musical triumph of the year.

The Maze describes the recording process as an enjoyable experience, as Johan and Liam’s ideas were quickly grasped and understood by Magnus, allowing them to align in a perfect trio where all three talented musicians contribute their authentic approach in a symbiotic and unified manner.

However, this composition holds an even deeper significance for them, as it symbolizes the reunion of Magnus Styrén and Johan Flenskov. After years of collaborating closely in music, the two artists come together once more, nine years after their last joint project. This return not only celebrates their shared history but also represents a reaffirmation of the band's artistic vision and their commitment to creating works of great meaning for their listeners and for humanity.
